STEP BY STEP TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable Tourism is all about the changes we make, no matter how small, that allow us to take bigger steps forward in ensuring our environment remains protected and unspoiled. We want to highlight some businesses that are making a difference in our community, including ways you can learn more and take your first steps to sustainability…

REFILL AND REDUCE

Refilleries are an important addition to our community, as they allow us to refill everyday products without all the plastic waste that’s normally associated with our household staples. It means you’re more likely to buy as much as you need, greatly reducing the amount that is thrown out.

MASON JAR MERCHANT
9220 Glover Road

Mason jars aren’t just beautiful, but useful and practical too! The more glass we used in our everyday lives, the less household waste we produced. Since 2015, the Mason Jar Merchant has brought hundreds of eco-friendly products into our community and knows that swapping plastic for glass is the best way to start your low-waste journey!

CHUCKLING DUCKLING FARM
9188 Glover Road

Alongside offering an in-store refillery, that will soon be available online, Chuckling Duckling was also able to create its own line of soothing bath, body, and home products. These products are not only incredible on your skin, but respect the planet as well, containing all-natural ingredients that are grown and sourced locally.

THE SOURCE BULK FOODS

You’ll find more than 450 bulk foods on-site, including organic whole foods, cooking liquids and oils, healthy snacks, and sustainable personal and household products. Plus, it’s all plastic-free.

ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING

Sustainable packaging helps both the producer and the consumer to reduce their environmental impact. Simply changing out plastic elements to biodegradable ones can greatly reduce the amount of waste going into our landfills.

KRAUSE BERRY FARMS
6179 248th Street

At Krause, they’ve switched all their take-out containers and cutlery to biodegradable ones; meaning you can enjoy fresh hot waffles served year-round from their Waffle Bar with little impact on our environment!

Implementing new changes to help reduce their carbon footprint, Maria’s has not used any styrofoam packaging materials since 2016, which has saved over 5,000 containers from going into the landfill each year! They’ve also switched out their gelato cups, spoons, and napkins to biodegradable and encourage you to bring in your own reusable cups, mugs, and tumblers when possible.

FLOWER FORT
Call for address (604) 787-3337

If you’ve ever received a flower arrangement from Flower Fort you might have noticed that the green foam, commonly used in the floral industry, is missing. By avoiding this foam they’re helping to protect our environment from the plastic material that breaks into tiny pieces and the potential toxins that can easily leach into our water systems.

As so much more than great food, Down 2 Earth focuses on the intersection of compassion, health and sustainability. With their menu packaged in environmentally friendly dinnerware, there is no worry as you take care of the earth through their fully vegan, dairy-free, and plant-based menu.
